Letterpress Intensive 28/10/08

Over the weekend I was lucky enough to take part in a fantastic letterpress workshop held by Carolyn Fraser of Idlewild Press. It was a great experience learning the ins and outs of setting type, inking and preparing the presses and how to produce our own prints. Here are a few images from the workshop, and I have just uploaded a few more to flickr.

New Font 07/08/08

Here’s a little peak at the typeface I’m currently working on. There are still a few characters to go, and will need some tweaking after they are finished, so might be a little while until its all done.
Summer Fun & Fonts 09/08/07

After reading Rob Giampietro’s piece The Fonts of Summer over at Design Observer, I though I would mention my latest summer crush, Goudy Heavyface. Designed by Frederic Goudy in 1925, it was intended to compete with the then new Cooper Black, which became quite iconic in the 70’s. I find Cooper Black quite synonymous with summer, so its no surprise that Goudy Heavyface also reminds me of the same warm, sunny beach filled months. If only they would hurry up and get here …
Helvetica 05/06/07

Since its premiere in March this year, Gary Hustwit’s documentary Helvetica has been traveling the globe, and has so far screened around 40 times at various museums, universities and film festivals internationally. Next month will see the Australian premiere of the film at ACMI in Melbourne as part of the design forum Character.
Ironically, Character is organised and run by Melbourne designer Stephen Banham, who in 2003 ran a campaign against the font Helvetica, and in 2004 went so far as to publish a book denouncing the san serif typeface. He even released a series of “Death to Helvetica” and “Helvetica Thin: Just Say No” T-Shirts.
It will be interesting to see if this is brought up in the forum following the screening of the film.
